A crostata is an Italian baked cake, also known as coppi in Naples and sfogliate in Lombardy. The earliest known use of of crostata in the modern sense can be traced to the cookbooks Libro de Arte Coquinaria (Book of Cookery) by Martino da Como (published around 1465) and Cuoco napolitano (Neapolitan cook) to the late 15th century. A crostata is a "rustic freeform open-faced fruit tart" that can also be baked in a pie plate.
Bon appétit !
